What makes the CrystaLens unique?

In conventional lens implant surgery, which has been the standard treatment for cataracts for many years, the surgeon implants a fixed focus plastic or silicone artificial lens. This lens allows the patient to see well only at distance. For reading vision, patients would require a pair of glasses.

Unlike other intraocular lenses (IOLs), the CrystaLens has the unique ability to focus on objects at varying distances using the eye's natural muscle. This means that the CrystaLens can provide sharper vision, without corrective lenses, potentially throughout a full range of vision from near to far and everything in between.

Standard (single vision) lens implants do not have the ability to provide a full range of vision. Most people who have single vision lens implants MUST wear glasses for middle and near vision. Similarly, most people over the age of 45 who have LASIK have a single range of vision, unless they have one eye treated for distance and one eye corrected for near vision. This type of treatment, sometimes called "monovision" has its own set of limitations and may not be the answer for everyone.

However, the Crystalens is able to restore your eye's natural focusing ability by using a design that corresponds to the way the natural lens flexes and focuses.

Comparison of Fixed Focus and Crystalens Characteristics

• Fixed focal point
• Corrects only distance vision
• Does not move in eye
• Glasses required
  • Moving focal point - "accommodates"
• Full range of distance, intermediate, and near vision
• Uses eye's natural focusing mechanism
• Use of glasses is greatly minimized

The Crystalens is implanted in a similar manner to other intraocular lenses. It can be implanted after the removal of the eye's natural lens using the same technique as modern cataract surgery. This means your surgery can performed on an outpatient patient basis and that you can resume your normal work and recreational activities within a couple of days.

The Crystalens is a new technology that is designed to mimic the eye's natural ability to focus on distant, middle and near objects. Used in conjunction with standard cataract extraction methods, the Crystalens can potentially restore a full range of functional vision, from distance to reading vision without total dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

The Crystalens Clinical Trials:

The Crystalens is intended and FDA Approved for the visual correction, secondary to the removal of a cataract, in adult patients with and without presbyopia.

  • 98.4% of patients implanted with the Crystalens accommodating lens in both eyes could pass a driver's test without glasses
  • 100% could see intermediate (24" to 30") without glasses, the distance for most of life's activities
  • 98.4% could see well enough to read the newspaper and the phone book without glasses
  • Some patients did require glasses for some tasks after implantation of the Crystalens accommodating lens
  • Significantly more patients implanted with a Crystalens (88.4%) could see better at all distances without glasses than patients implanted with a standard IOL (35.9%)
