Are You a LASIK Candidate?

If you lead an active lifestyle and are bothered by the inconvenience or appearance of glasses and the risks of contact lenses, you may be a candidate for laser vision correction. Also, if allergies, dry eye, or other eye disorders make contact lenses too irritating to wear, laser vision correction may be a safe, convenient alternative.

Generally, you must be 18 years old and have healthy eyes without any significant change in your prescription over the past year.

What is LASIK?
In this procedure, the surface layer of corneal tissue is folded back from its usual position. The laser then gently reshapes the surface, and the surface layer is placed back in its original position, where it bonds naturally. The procedure takes about five minutes.

Most patients say they have no pain with LASIK, and most can return to work the next day.

LASIK can treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. With monovision or blended vision correction, LASIK can also correct Presbyopia.

Using WaveScan® based digital technology, originally developed for use in high-powered telescopes to reduce distortions when viewing distant objects in space, we can now identify, measure and correct imperfections in your eyes 25 times more precisely than with standard methods used for glasses and contact lenses. Verisyse® and
Visian ICL® Implantable Contact Lenses

If you are too nearsighted for LASIK, these tiny lens implants may be a more suitable choice. In these FDA approved procedures, a tiny contact lens is inserted inside the eye, where it remains permanently. Studies show that vision is often better than with glasses.

LASEK and PRK
These laser procedures are similar to LASIK, but the laser treatment is performed directly on the surface of the eye. Healing time is slightly longer than LASIK. Most people have normal vision after four or five days. These procedures are usually chosen for people whose corneal shape is not ideal for LASIK.

Understanding Vision —
  Myopia (nearsightedness) occurs when the eye focuses objects in front of the retina. Distant objects become blurred, but near vision is usually preserved.

LASIK Eye Surgery The first phakic IOL to receive full FDA approval is the Verisyse lens. The Verisyse lens is made of polymethylmethacrylate, and is placed in front of the iris, the colored part of the eye. The Verisyse IOL Patients who received Verisyse in one eye and LASIK in the other preferred the Verisyse eye because of the better quality of vision. Visian ICLs The Visian ICL is a phakic intraocular lens which is placed behind the iris, in front of the natural lens in the eye. The Visian lens is made of collamer, a co-polymer that contains a small amount of purified collagen. The Visian lens is very biocompatible (doesn't cause a reaction inside the eye) and stable. The Visian lens also contains an ultraviolet light filter. The soft, flexible nature of the Visian ICL allows it to be injected into the eye through a very small incision. The Visian ICL Over 35,000 Visian ICL lens have been implanted to date. In the FDA clinical studies, 526 eyes were implanted with the Visian ICL lens, with an average preop nearsightedness of -10.06D. A recent study comparing the Visian ICL lens to LASIK showed a higher percentage of patients ending up with 20/20 or better uncorrected with the Visian ICL lens than with LASIK, at one year post-op. The Verisyse lens was approved in October 2004, for the reduction or elimination of nearsightedness ranging from –5.00D to –20.00D. The Verisyse lens is a polymethylmethacrylate lens implant placed in front of the iris, the colored part of the eye. The Verisyse lens attaches to the iris and is therefore known as an iris-fixated lens. This Verisyse lens design has been used in Europe for nearly two decades. In that time, more than 150,000 phakic refractive procedures have been performed using the Verisyse lens design. The Verisyse lens implant has shown excellent stability of vision over time, and a very high degree of predictability. With over 18 years of use and 150,000 procedures performed worldwide, results prove that the Verisyse design is safe and effective for very nearsighted people who are tired of thick glasses and are not candidates for Custom LASIK. How Verisyse works The procedure involves placing the Verisyse Phakic IOL behind your cornea and on top of your iris. This gives your eye another focusing lens that provides high-quality, high-definition vision like a normal eye. Although the Verisyse Phakic IOL is intended to be permanent, the procedure is reversible if desired. The word phakic means that your natural crystalline lens is left in the eye. This is important because your natural lens plays an important role in helping your eye adjust between seeing objects that are near and far. About the Verisyse procedure Implanting the Verisyse Phakic IOL is an outpatient procedure that takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Usually, one eye is treated at a time. Drops will be placed in your eyes in order to reduce the pupil size. For better access to your eye, your doctor will use an instrument to comfortably hold your eyelids open during the procedure. A local anesthetic is given to numb the eye, so the procedure is virtually painless. A small incision is made in the cornea for the Verisyse Phakic IOL to be placed in the space between the iris and the cornea. The Verisyse Phakic IOL is centered in front of the pupil (the black part in the center of your eye), and is gently attached to the iris (the colored part of your eye) to hold the lens in place. The small incision is closed with microscopic stitches that dissolve over time. A temporary shield will be placed over your eye to protect it during the time just after the procedure.
