Botox® and Restylane®
The appearance of wrinkles increases as a result of sun exposure and your age. Luckily, recent advancements in medicine allow you to diminish the look of crow's feet, frown lines, and furrowed brows with a simple fifteen-minute procedure. We offer both BOTOX® and RESTYLANE® treatments for those hoping to smooth their wrinkles for a more youthful appearance.
BOTOX® and RESTYLANE® are two wrinkle reduction procedures that work in very different ways. Both treatments are applied with an extremely fine needle that injects small amounts of medicine under the skin. It is a non-surgical procedure that can be performed in an examination room and requires no anesthetic.
What is the difference between BOTOX® and RESTYLANE®?
While achieving similar results, BOTOX® and RESTYLANE® are two very different compounds. BOTOX® is a purified protein formulation of botulinum toxin type A, which works as a muscle relaxant. RESTYLANE®, like collagen, is a cosmetic dermal filler that adds volume and fullness to skin. It is the only dermal filler comprised of non-animal-based hyaluronic acid, a naturally-occurring substance already found in the human body.
How does BOTOX® work?
BOTOX® is an FDA-approved protein compound that reduces wrinkles in the upper third of the face, including forehead lines, crow's feet, and frown lines between the eyes. Just a few tiny injections are needed to weaken and inactivate the muscles that cause wrinkles. As the muscle weakens, the skin overlying the muscle relaxes, causing the wrinkles caused by muscle contractions to soften and often disappear. Since it paralyzes only muscle, BOTOX® does not affect the sensory nerves or cause any numbness of the face. Results typically last up to four months or longer.
BOTOX® was ranked the most popular of all cosmetic procedures in both 2002 and 2003 by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
How does RESTYLANE® work?
RESTYLANE® is a cosmetic dermal filler that restores fullness to the skin, much like collagen. It is the first and only dermal filler in the U.S. composed of NASHA® gel, Non-Animal Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that already exists in the human body, making RESTYLANE® a safe and effective way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. A few tiny injections fill the skin beneath each wrinkle, smoothing the skin and adding volume. Results typically last up to six months or longer.
RESTYLANE®s' non-animal base also means more safety for you: it is fully biocompatible, virtually eliminates any risk of animal-based disease transmission, and does not require any allergy tests prior to your procedure. RESTYLANE® lasts twice as long as collagen and keeps its shape using the body's own moisture.
What should I expect?
During your first consultation, your doctor will determine which treatment is appropriate for you, depending on your needs and expectations. Be sure to ask any questions and address any concerns before undergoing the procedure. This exam will also allow the doctor to determine the number and regularity of treatments that best suit your needs.
Since treatment is non-surgical, it does not require a surgery center. Instead, the procedure can be performed in an examination room. The appointment typically lasts only fifteen to thirty minutes, where the doctor will inject an extremely small dose of either BOTOX® or RESTYLANE®, using an ultra-fine needle. You may feel a slight stinging sensation during injection, which quickly subsides.
With BOTOX®, you may not see immediate effects until three or four days after treatment, and you will notice improvement for several days after that. If you experience any discomfort after the procedure, ice compresses or over-the-counter pain medication can be used. Some BOTOX® patients may experience a temporary drooping of the eyelid, as the treatment may spread and relax your eyelid muscles. This usually goes away after a week or two.
Because this procedure is non-invasive and non-surgical, you may return to your normal activities immediately. Be aware, however, that neither BOTOX® nor RESTYLANE® is a cure for severe wrinkles. The appearance of wrinkles will diminish after treatment, but may not disappear entirely. However, regular treatments, as discussed with your doctor, have been shown to have a long-lasting effect on the reduction of wrinkles in your face.
BOTOX® and RESTYLANE®, when used in extremely small doses, have a high level of safety. Serious complications are extremely rare, but like any medical procedure, it does carry risk. Consult with your doctor to discuss any concerns or questions you may have. The vast majority of our patients are extremely happy with their appearance after treatment, though we cannot guarantee results. We assure that we will give our best effort to achieve the results you desire.
