Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine) is a common medication used to treat systemic conditions such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sarcoidosis, Lupus and other autoimmune disorders. The drug has a small potential to cause damage to the retina, known as "retinopathy."
It is important to tell your doctor about any changes you notice to your vision. We recommend regular eye exams while on Plaquenil to catch early changes. Your ophthalmologist will monitor for Plaquenil retinopathy for many patients who take this drug annually.
Symptoms of retinopathy include blind spots in the central vision, blurring and distortion of objects. Other possible symptoms include flashes of light, light sensitivity, night blindness and color distortion.
Obesity
Low body weight
Renal or hepatic dysfunction
Extended duration of therapy
Daily dose more than 400mg
Lifetime dose over 1,000 grams
To monitor patients on Plaquenil, our doctors will usually test visual acuity, distortion test, color vision, dilated retinal exam and central visual field. Usually annual examinations can detect signs of retinopathy. If Plaquenil retinopathy is detected, the drug is immediately stopped, and vision tends become normal or stabilize, however, it can be permanently affected.
