Verisyse Phakic IOL Southern California Verisyse Phakic Intraocular Lens (IOL). It is adapted from education materials from Advanced Medical Optics (AMO).
The Verisyse Phakic IOL is used to treat moderate to severe myopia, the medical term for nearsightedness. The Verisyse design is safe and effective for very nearsighted people who are tired of thick glasses and are not candidates for Custom LASIK.
Am I a candidates for Verisyse?
If you are very nearsighted, at least 21 years of age and dependent on thick glasses or contact lenses, you may be a candidate for the Verisyse Phakic IOL.
A series of tests performed by your doctor can help you decide if the Verisyse procedure is right for you:
Verisyse Phakic IOL
Your eyes are stable and your nearsightedness has not changed more than 0.50 diopters for 6 months prior to surgery.
You are not currently pregnant or nursing.
There is not another vision correction procedure that provides a better alternative for your visual condition. How Verisyse works
The procedure involves placing the Verisyse Phakic IOL behind your cornea and on top of your iris. This gives your eye another focusing lens that provides high-quality, high-definition vision like a normal eye. Although the Verisyse Phakic IOL is intended to be permanent, the procedure is reversible if desired.
The word phakic means that your natural crystalline lens is left in the eye. This is important because your natural lens plays an important role in helping your eye adjust between seeing objects that are near and far.
About the Verisyse procedure
Implanting the Verisyse Phakic IOL is an outpatient procedure that takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes. Usually, one eye is treated at a time.
Drops will be placed in your eyes in order to reduce the pupil size.
For better access to your eye, your doctor will use an instrument to comfortably hold your eyelids open during the procedure.
A local anesthetic is given to numb the eye, so the procedure is virtually painless.
A small incision is made in the cornea for the Verisyse Phakic IOL to be placed in the space between the iris and the cornea.
The Verisyse Phakic IOL is centered in front of the pupil (the black part in the center of your eye), and is gently attached to the iris (the colored part of your eye) to hold the lens in place.
The small incision is closed with microscopic stitches that dissolve over time.
A temporary shield will be placed over your eye to protect it during the time just after the procedure.
Be sure to discuss this procedure with your doctor to determine the best treatment option for you.

The STAAR Collamer ICL and the TORIC ICL (Visian ICL lens) are posterior chamber phakic intraocular lenses. Made of Collamer, STAAR's proprietary collagen copolymer, the lens rests behind the iris in the ciliary sulcus. This unique material contains a small amount of collagen, which provides excellent biocompatibility and superior optical capability. The lens is gently folded and injected into the anterior chamber through a 3.0mm, temporal, clear corneal incision. The ICL is then carefully positioned by manipulating the footplates of the lens posterior to the iris plane and into the sulcus. Visian ICL - Myopia

Toric Implantable Contact Lens - Myopia
The Visian ICL lens Although the Visian ICL lens Collamer ICL and the Toric ICL are available in many countries, they are currently not approved for use in the United States. The FDA clinical trial for nearsightedness concluded in 1999 and the Company is currently enrolling candidates in the trial for the Toric ICL, as well as candidates for the hyperopic ICL. The Toric ICL is capable of correcting nearsightedness with astigmatism while the hyperopic ICL is capable of correcting farsightedness. Unlike laser refractive surgery, the Visian ICL lens is removable and does not permanently alter the shape or structures of the eye. The Visian ICL lens is currently available in three models - ICM for myopia, ICH for hyperopia and TICM for Toric ICL for myopia. There have been over 34,986 Visian ICL lens implanted world-wide. Extensive development has been undertaken to deliver the most recent version of the Visian ICL lens. Version 4 of the Visian ICL lens is optimally vaulted to produce consistent clearance from the crystalline lens; an improvement over earlier versions of the lens. Ongoing development of sizing methods have virtually eliminated previous problems due to inadequate vaulting through undersizing. The Collamer ICL also provides excellent quality of vision. In a comparison of induced aberrations, ten Implantable Contact Lens patients and ten LASIK patients with a range of myopia from -8.0 to -10.0D were evaluated using wavefront analysis at least six months postoperatively. Biocompatibility The Visian ICL lens is made with Swiss precision from Collamer. The collagen component in Collamer repels the protein molecules that are attracted to silicone lenses, which cause fibrosis, while attracting a monolayer of fibronectin that isolates the lens from the immune system, virtually eliminating the possibility of an immune response. The result is -exquisitely quiet eyes even in uveitis and diabetic patients-. Large, well-studied cohorts show that the ICL demonstrates no evidence of long-term inflammation clinically or with the laser-flare meter. Optical and mechanical advantages Visian ICL lens Collamer has a molecular size of only 100nm, shorter than the wavelength of visible light. This results in an optimal refractive index for maximum light transmission and minimum glare and halo. The collagen copolymer Collamer provides ideal flexibilty for injectable use, unfolding gently and predictably in the eye. Visian ICL lens is a product that delivers excellent quality of vision, an excellent product that has a safe margin I think that the patients will trust the physicians to say if you want the best quality of vision, this is your choice, the Visian ICL lens would be your best option. Verisyse Phakic Intraocular Lens for Extreme Myopia
How Verisyse Works
The Verisyse procedure involves placing the Verisyse Phakic IOL behind your cornea and on top of your Iris. This gives your eye additional focusing lens that corrects your nearsightedness, much like have a contact lens placed inside of your eye. Although the Verisyse Phakic IOL is intended to be permanent, the procedure is reversible if desired.
The word Phakic means that your natural crystalline lens is left in the eye. This is important because your natural lens is responsible for helping your eye adjust between seeing objects that are near and far.
An Intraocular Lens is a microscopic lens that can be placed inside your eye in order to correct certain vision problems or conditions of the eye. The most common type of Intraocular Lens is one that is implanted in your eye when you have the natural lens in your eye removed during cataract surgery. This type of Intraocular Lens is called a "Pseudophakic Intraocular Lens" because it is a replacement for your natural lens. It is placed behind the Iris, or colored part of your eye in an anatomical area called the Posterior Chamber. For patients who are extremely nearsighted and may have contraindications to LASIK, an Intraocular Lens may be implanted in front of the Iris, in an anatomical area called the Anterior Chamber. When an Anterior Chamber Lens is implanted, it is possible to leave the natural crystalline lens intact that allows for uninterrupted focusing from far to near, a process called accommodation. For patients who are extremely nearsighted and who have LASIK contraindications, Verisyse may be an effective option for correcting their distance vision and maintaining normal focusing ability and near vision.
